Safae Gounane
Safae Gounane (1999) is a painter based in Amsterdam. Her paintings emerge from observations of everyday life, conversations, friendships and nightlife. Working intuitively, she combines reality with imagination to create layered figurative worlds in which intimacy, existentialism, feminism and contemporary life come together. Through painting, she explores how personal experiences intertwine with collective emotions and how fleeting moments can become lasting images.
My paintings begin with observation. A shared glance, a conversation with a stranger, a night out or a fleeting feeling can be enough to start a work. I collect these fragments and transform them into paintings where reality merges with imagination.
Working intuitively allows me to follow images before I fully understand them. Figures, colours and symbols appear almost instinctively and slowly reveal their meaning during the process. In this way, painting becomes a dialogue with my subconscious.
I am interested in intimacy, friendship, feminism, existentialism and the tension between our inner and outer worlds. My work explores how hope, joy and tenderness can exist alongside uncertainty, violence and political tension. Rather than offering answers, I create spaces where contradictions are allowed to coexist and where viewers are invited to bring their own memories, emotions and interpretations.
