Pascal Smelik
Pascal Smelik is a Dutch artist and designer whose work explores the relationship between perception, emotion, and time. Working with light, reflection, and transparent materials such as glass and acrylic, he creates layered compositions that shift with the viewer’s position and the surrounding space. His practice moves between art, design, and research, balancing technical precision with an intuitive approach. Based in Zeist, Smelik has presented his work in both autonomous and applied contexts, nationally and internationally.
My work begins with perception. I am interested in how what we see is never fixed, but constantly shaped by light, movement, and attention.
Through layering materials such as glass and acrylic, I create structures that shift depending on the viewer’s position. These changes are subtle, but they alter the experience of the work over time. What appears stable becomes fluid.
I often work with repetition and concentric forms as a way to build tension between control and release. There is a need for precision in the process, but also a willingness to let things unfold beyond intention.
Themes of vulnerability and inner experience run through my work. I am not trying to define them, but to create conditions in which they can be felt.
At its core, my work is an invitation to slow down and look again. Not to find a single meaning, but to stay with the experience as it shifts.
