Obbe van der weide

Obbe van der Weide (1996) is a Dutch contemporary artist whose sculptural practice explores the relationship between technology, perception, and the human condition. Working between drawing, digital modeling, and sculpture, he creates hybrid forms that balance organic structures with industrial precision. His process begins with expressive charcoal sketches that are translated into digitally constructed forms and materialized through resin printing, sanding, and galvanization. Through these works, van der Weide reflects on the invisible technological systems that increasingly shape contemporary experience.

My work explores technology as a psychological and structural presence rather than a functional object. I am interested in the way it shapes perception, behavior, and our understanding of ourselves, often operating invisibly while influencing nearly every aspect of contemporary life.

I approach technology as an abstract entity, something systemic and omnipresent that both supports and confines organic existence. Through sculpture, I try to give form to this tension.

The process begins with expressive charcoal and pencil sketches. These drawings are immediate and instinctive, capturing movement and energy before being translated into digital 3D models. Within this virtual space, different visual references merge into hybrid sculptural bodies that feel both familiar and unfamiliar.

The forms are materialized through resin printing and refined through sanding, galvanization, and varnishing. What interests me is the contrast between the raw spontaneity of the original sketch and the controlled precision of the final surface.

My sculptures reflect on the invisible systems that increasingly define contemporary experience and the evolving relationship between the organic and the technological.
